What happens during a herbal medicine consultation

Herbal medicine consultations are run by a medical herbalist. A medical herbalist is a health professional, who have completed and exhaustive training ranging from three to four years at degree level; involving materia medica, pharmacology,anatomy,physiology among others, which give to the medical herbalist knowledge to assess and prescribe herbal remedies in a safe way; taking in account any medication or condition that the patient may present.
The first consultation last approximately one hour to 1 1/2 hour ; during this time a detailed medical history will be taken; covering presenting complaint, current and past medical history and medication. In addition blood pressure and pulse would be recorded and when appropriate other examination may be performed. At the end of the consultation treatment plan, any findings and prescription will be
discussed with the patient. Your medical herbalist as well will give you lifestyle advice and if appropriate other treatments (counselling, osteopathy, massage...) will be suggested.
Herbal medication will be given in form of a tincture, where different herbs to suit each case will be mixed in a bottle ; as dried herbs (tea), herbal juices or as topical application such as creams or oils. Depending on each case medication will be given for 2-4 weeks and then a follow up will be normally required until symptoms ease. The duration of the treatment course differs from case to case, however this will be discussed with the patient. Patient progress will be regularly assess and changes on prescription and action plans will be reassess as patient condition change.
